Upcoming UK General Election: What it Means for 11+ Entry Competition

With the upcoming UK general election scheduled for July 4th, parents and educators are closely monitoring potential changes in education policy. Both leading political parties have announced their education visions for the next parliament, the Labour Party's proposal to impose a 20% VAT on independent schools could cause a major shift in secondary education, with grammar schools being particularly effected. By June 17th, all parties will have released their manifestos, providing a clear understanding of their future policies.

At KSOL, we understand the importance of remaining vigilant and responsive to such shifts in the educational landscape to ensure we keep parents informed.

The Impact on Independent Schools:

The proposed 20% VAT charge on the UK's 2,500 independent schools could profoundly influence families' educational decisions. For instance, at London's Westminster Independent School, annual fees of £34,299 could soar to £41,158 if the VAT increase is implemented. Such a financial increase may compel families to seek alternative options like state grammar or comprehensive schools.

A recent 2024 report from the Telegraph indicates that sought-after schools should brace for a flood of applications. Should this happen, it will be felt first by grammar schools, which are seen as a natural alternative to independent schools. While some grammar schools have catchment areas, many London grammar schools like St Olave’s do not, and they will likely receive an influx of applications. Grammar schools without catchment areas will become even more competitive as they attract applicants from wider regions.

It is no hidden secret that grammar schools require children aged 11 to sit an entrance test, but with this potential new influx of applicants, could cause the entry standard to rise. This heightened demand could lead to a more rigorous selection process. Preparing for the 11plus must be very structured and organised to improve pupils’ chances for the secondary selective test.
