KSOL's Plan for Success – January & February

As we welcome the start of 2025, it’s hard to believe that September and the 11+ entrance exams are just 8 months away. As parents who have navigated this milestone ourselves, we truly understand how significant this journey is in shaping your child’s academic future. To help you prepare for what’s sure to be a busy and exciting year, our expert tutors have put together a New Year’s Guide. This advice is offered to maintain a healthy balance between structured learning and well-deserved downtime.

Take a look at our suggested plans for January and February below, and be sure to check back for more updates every two months.

Understanding

January: Kickstarting the Year with Focus

The new year is the perfect opportunity for your child to set fresh goals and resolutions. Whether they aim to organise their revision materials, strengthen their reading skills, (checkout our downloadable recommended reading list here) or master a challenging topic, January is the time to solidify habits that will set them up for success. We suggest 15 minutes of daily reading (both fiction and nonfiction) is best.

Encourage your child to create and regularly review a revision folder, set aside time for daily reading, or review key concepts regularly. These small steps will not only make revision more manageable but also provide them with a strong foundation for the months ahead. By building this groundwork now, they’ll find it much easier to stay on track through the summer.

Safe Space

February: Building a Strong Foundation

Think of the 11+ exam as a house – the stronger the foundation, the sturdier the structure. By now, your child should have a solid grasp of the fundamentals, including times tables, multiplication and division, and fraction operations like adding and subtracting. These essential skills are the backbone of 11+ preparation.

Additionally, children should regularly practise their taught comprehension techniques and review their non-verbal reasoning (NVR) checklist. For those seeking extra support, we’re offering KSOL LIVE sessions and in-person workshops during the February half-term, which are now bookable! Don’t miss out on this valuable opportunity to give your child a boost in their 11+ preparation.

Tailored Study Plans for Every Family

Every child’s journey is unique, so it’s important to adapt their study schedule to suit their school commitments, focus areas, and extracurricular activities. Striking the right balance between study and play is key to managing stress and maintaining motivation throughout the process. We advise regular, small bites of revision: little and often boosts retention of key information whilst avoiding fatigue.

At KSOL, our goal is to keep children engaged while ensuring they’re not overwhelmed. Our Year 5 Online Courses provide daily tests that take just 25-30 minutes, helping establish a consistent and effective routine. Click here for more information!
