Admissions Criteria

For both 2022 and 2023, children needed at least a score of 205 to be considered eligible for admission into a Birmingham Grammar School. The priority score is 224, meaning those who score 224 or above are prioritised for a place.

The lowest score for which a place was offered at King Edward VI Handsworth School for Boys in 2022 was 211, which came under category 5.

In the highly likely scenario where the number of qualifying applicants exceeds the available spots, the allocation of places follows this hierarchy:

1. Children in care or those who were previously in care, who met the qualifying score, ranked by test score and then by distance from the school.

2. Children who are eligible for free school meals, who met the qualifying score and live in catchment.

3. If the number of category 2 children filling the slots is less than 38, these spots will be made available to children who receive free school meals, meet the qualifying scores, but live outside the catchment area.

4. Children who achieve the priority score, and live in the catchment area. A child is prioritised if they have a sibling at the school first, then by the distance in which they live from the school.

5. All other children who achieve the qualifying score, ranked by their test score. When scores are equal, priority is given to children with a sibling at the school, then by distance from the school.

Catchment

The catchment area includes residential addresses located within the following Birmingham electoral wards:

Birmingham: Birchfield, Edgbaston, Handsworth, Handsworth Wood, Holyhead, Kingstanding, Ladywood, Lozells, Newtown, North Edgbaston, Oscott, Perry Barr, Soho & Jewellery Quarter.

Sandwell: Smethwick, Soho & Victoria, St Paul’s, West Bromwich Central.
